Director Christopher Nolan revealed in an interview on December 12th, that for his next big blockbuster Oppenheimer he opted not to use CGI but instead recreate a nuclear explosion for the sake of realism. The film, which stars Cillian Murphy, star of Peaky Blinders and a consistent cast member in several of Nolan’s previous titles, tells the story of the “father of the atomic bomb,” J. Robert Oppenheimer. It’s set to release in theaters in July 2023.

“I think recreating the Trinity test without the use of computer graphics was a huge challenge to take on,” Nolan told Total Film Magazine. For those of you unfamiliar, the Trinity test was the first-ever detonation of an atomic bomb. The test took place in Sorrocco, New Mexico, and spelled success for the U.S. military’s “Manhattan Project,” which aimed at creating the first nuclear weaponry.

“It’s a story of immense scope and scale and one of the most challenging projects I’ve ever taken on in terms of the scale of it, and in terms of encountering the breadth of Oppenheimer’s story. There were big, logistical challenges, big practical challenges. But I had an extraordinary crew, and they really stepped up. It will be a while before we’re finished. But certainly, as I watch the results come in, and as I’m putting the film together, I’m thrilled with what my team has been able to achieve,” he added. These new details seem promising.

In the meantime, the internet has had a blast meme-ing the crap out of this news.
